Happy new year! We are getting very excited about closing the vendor applications this Saturday at midnight for the next Odd Duck Bazaar on March 31st. We have some tough work ahead of us as we narrow down the extremely long list of awesome applicants! This is one of the most difficult duties required of us as event coordinators. Craft Mafia girls getting ready for a road trip to Sarasota

On December 10th, Christine and I will head out on our first Craft Show vending road trip! We are going all the way to the west coast (west coast of Florida, that is). We are both vending at the sixth annual Atomic Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, December 10th and Sunday, December 11th at the SQR Municipal Auditorium in Sarasota. I'm super excited because I've heard so much amazing stuff about this show throughout the years and I am thrilled to get to finally be a part of it. New Date & Location Announced for Odd Duck Bazaar 2012

Odd Duck Handmade Bazaar and Indie Craft Fair is moving to a new location. On March 31, 2012, at the downtown Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center, you can expect a day of unique handmade crafts, art, food, live music and more. Admission is $5 for adults and children under 12 get in free. This indoor & outdoor event, with more than 70 vendors, takes place from Noon until 6:00 pm.

Rules are non-existent when it comes to indie arts & crafts and that's what the Hollywood Craft Mafia strives to represent at the Odd Duck Bazaar. Through an extensive selection process, we cherry-pick each vendor, and ensure the audience with a worthy variety of handmade goods. If it can be sewn, cut, painted, glued, sculpted, hammered, drawn, or knotted, more than likely it has been sold at an Odd Duck bazaar. Opposed to mass-produced, local artisans reconnect the mainstream with hands-on activities and aesthetics. The aspect that unites Odd Duck participants are the many creations pushed beyond traditional techniques and boundaries. Sweater Hat & Leg Warmers Tutorial

This up-cycle craft is a great way to continue the love of a favorite sweater. For the tutorial example, we have a child who out-grew last season's winter wear. We took one sweater, transformed it in a few simple steps, and now have a hat with leg warmers for next season!

First, you will need a few tools to get you through this project: measuring tape, scissors, pins, chalk, and a sewing machine. You'll also need one sweater and thread.

GETTING READY: Turn the sweater inside out. Place it neatly on a flat surface.

DETERMINING THE WIDTH: Measure the head of the person, for whom you will be making the hat for. Subtract about 4 or 5 inches then divide that number in half. This will give you the measurement for the opening of the hat when it is laying flat, two sides together. In our example, the child's head is 20" around. 20 - 4 = 16. 16/2 = 8. See figure A to place your measurement. Mark your width with chalk.

DETERMINING THE LENGTH: We made a cone shaped hat, but you can make your hat as long as you want. The standard height is about 8 inches. Determine how long you want your hat, then make a mark at that height, in the center. On our example, we made the center mark at 4" (see Figure B). Then you will sketch a semi-circle with chalk (or cone shape like our example). Go pin crazy on the inside and outside of the chalk line, pinning both sides of the sweater together. This is when you will want to make sure you line up any patterns in the sweater (see Figure C).

LETS GET SEWING: Sew on the chalk line using a strait stitch on the stretch setting. Do not sew the bottom opening of your hat! In our example, we did not need to stitch up one side of the hat because we used the sweater's original stitching.

CUT IT OUT: Trim around your stitches about a quarter-inch. You should now have what looks like a hat inside out! Lastly, use the zig-zag stretch stitch over your quarter-inch edges to keep the sweater from unraveling (see Figure D). Turn the hat right side out and you're done!

MATCHING LEG WARMERS: Cut the sleeves off the sweater, close to the armpit (or at desired length). Sew a zig zag stretch stitch around the raw edge, but don't sew the two sides together (see figure E and F). Turn them right side out, and you're finished.

Christine and I have been busily working on some upcoming events that we aren't quite ready to announce, but there are some exciting future plans that we can share with you now. We've committed to vending in a couple of shows this fall and figured we'd tell you about it now so you can get them on your calendar early. Christine (Belle Adore) will be vending at a new south Florida show called Art: Sunny Side Up which will be held the Hilton 100 Fairway Drive, Deerfield Beach, FL 33441 on September 11th from 10-4pm. It is exciting to see new indie shows. There is no need to tell you how much we love the indie craft scene, so seeing it growing just warms my heart.
I'll be vending my Kitschy Aprons & Softies at Stitch Rock in Delray on October 1st. Stitch Rock is held at the Old School Gymnasium 51 N. Swinton Ave, Delray Beach, FL 33444 and will be from noon to 6. You can find out more on their website or facebook page

Changes in the Mafia

Dear Handmade Community,

This is not a "Dear John" letter, just a little note to let you know that things are changing for the Hollywood Craft Mafia. First, let us assure that Shelley and Christine are still manning the helm and planning amazing crafty events and goodness for our community.

However, excited to focus on personal projects, Alexis and Tina are planning to move on to other pastures. It is with a conflicted and heavy heart that they both leave, there has been so much success with the Craft Mafia it's hard to walk away. They both plan on still being involved and supportive of the HCM and the handmade community; Alexis will still help create promo materials from time to time and both will volunteer for HCM crafty events whenever they get the chance.

There will also be other changes. The jam packed calendar we announced in April will be re-evaluated and more information will be announced as it becomes available.

Odd Duck was an overwhelming success and we more than doubled the number of attendees from the year before. The positive feedback we got from patrons and vendors alike made all our hard work very worthwhile. With each one of our events, the Hollywood Craft Mafia has contributed to the growing artisan community in south Florida and that will not change one bit. Thank you for your continued support of all things local and handmade.

It has been a little over a week since our big annual event, the Odd Duck handmade Bazaar and I'm still on a little bit of an adrenaline high. I have begun writing this post several times and I'm just at a loss for words in how to describe the event. It was fantastic! We had a few glitches that were out of our control, but for the most part... the day went smoothly, the weather was fabulous and most everyone had a great afternoon.

Lisa Ann is a lovely combination of an old-fashioned, service oriented, family photographer and a modern photography expert. She walks you through the experience from start to finish. Starting with a private consultation in your home to begin planning your portrait by discussing clothing options, determining areas of your home to display your portrait, and setting up all the necessary details for your session.

The session can take place in your home, or out on location. Sessions usually last between 1-2 hours. Lisa Ann provides a fun and unique experience to create natural expressions and authentic moments.

Within one week of your portrait session, Lisa Ann will schedule an appointment to meet with you in your home to view your images. During this time you will select your favorite images, and choose from an array of framing and mounting options. Together you will design your custom portrait that will fit perfectly in your home and enhance your decor. Specialty products will be available to share your images with family and friends.

16 Days until the Odd Duck Bazaar

I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am about this year's Odd Duck! Ok, I'll try. I've already been losing sleep over it and it is still 16 days away. Last year's event was fun but this year we've added so many new things that I cannot wait to see it all come into place. Last year we had 62 vendors, this year we have over 80. Last year we had one (very talented) guy put on an acoustic performance. This year we have three bands!
Last year we had two rooms packed full of vendors of handmade art & crafts, this year we've added a full 50 foot tent and a tiki hut into the mix.
Awesome thing is, we were able to add all this extra stuff and still keep the admission price the same as last year. Only 5 bucks and the parking is free.
We are located in the same place as last year, the Old Davie School museum located not far west of the Turnpike and East of University on Griffin Road. Get there early because the first 100 people to pay their admission get a free hand-screen printed re-usable tote bag.

One of my favorite things about the handmade movement is finding new and fascinating handmade stuff, and getting to know the people who make it. The inaugural Odd Duck was already a heart warming day, but meeting Will and his vintage & recycled robots made the show even more special for me.

His creations bring new life to old view finders, vintage tins, and other seemingly random bits and pieces. Even with being new to the indie craft scene, Will is friendly, open, and enjoys spinning yarns about the origins of his creations. It’s so exciting to meet a new (to me) crafter with so much talent, warmth, and love of what they do. I’m sure it doesn’t hurt that everyone else loves Will and his robots too!

Trying out the Lapel Stick

I just tried a new product called the Lapel Stick. The description claims it replaces baste stitching, pinning, taping, spray adhesives and stabilizers, and I found this to be accurate. The product comes packaged looking like one of those glue sticks I use with my children during crafting projects, and the consistency of the sticky material also seemed comparable. I used the Label Stick to finish the crown in this blog photo. I found the stick to be very easy to use, and it did indeed replace pre-pinning and ironing during my sewing project. However, I found it a bit awkward to avoid getting stickiness on my fingers while trying to keep the fabric folded within for a neat seam. After making two crowns, I had to wash my hands. Other than that, there was no residue leftover on my crown and if I wasn't telling you now, you'd never know I used it in my project! It is non-toxic, biodegradable, and fragrant free. Not only is it safe for all fabrics and water soluble, but it claims to not gum-up sewing machines either. I liked using the Lapel Stick because it saved me time, so I will definitely keep this in my sewing kit!

You might be wondering why it is called the Lapel Stick. The card insert also promotes using this product for fashion emergencies, fallen hems, gaping buttons, popping collars, slipping straps, and stopping a run in tights or nylons. Although I did not try using it in all these other ways, I have to admit it is a pretty nifty product. Anyway, I just had to share this little discovery and if you have any experience with it, please feel free to respond with your comments.

This Saturday, February 26th is jammed pack with two great crafty events! Start your day in Plantation's Liberty Tree Park, located at 7421 NW 5th Street at a Green Day Environmental Expo. This is a family friendly event with loads of shopping, raffles, live music, demonstrations, a bicycle parade and more! Shopping includes handmades, plants and foods. Hollywood Craft Mafia's own Christine Klein of Belle Adore Boutique will be there as a vendor. The event takes place between 9a and 3p.

Then, skip over to Fort Lauderdale to see two more of our own Hollywood Craft Mafia members, Tina Wright and Shelley Mitchell, who will be volunteering at the 2nd Annual Swap-O-Rama-Rama. If you haven't been to this event before, don't miss out this year! Start going through your closet and drawers now and dig out all those clothes you never wear. Bring them to the Swap-O-Rama-Rama between 1p and 5p and get $5 off your $10 admission. You give your unwanted clothes away and then shop through the loads of other clothes on racks and take what you want. You can try clothes on, get them altered at the sewing machines, or even screen print on them to make your items completely unique! Arrive between 5p and 11p with your bag of clothes and admission is $10. Lastly, there will be an ever-so-fabulous fashion show at 10p. Everything takes place at IWAN's the Bubble, 810 NE 4th Ave, Fort Lauderdale.

There’s something to be said for local indie music stores, and there’s even more to be said about great local indie music stores. Radio-Active Records definitely qualifies as great. In Memory of Leslie Schloss from Sweet Magnolia Original's

Leslie Schloss of Weston, sole-creator of Sweet Magnolia Original's, passed away in her home at age 55 on December 31, 2010. Sweet Magnolia Original's was a participant of the Hollywood Craft Mafia's Odd Duck Handmade Bazaar in 2010, and Leslie will be missed by the handmade community. She was comforted, and is survived by, her husband and partner of 37 years, David, children Stephen and Allie, and dog Benny. Her incredibly full and bright life was cut short too soon and without any reason or rhyme, but her fire will burn inside every being she touched. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society . Funeral service Monday, January 3rd, 1pm at Levitt Weinstein Memorial Chapel 3201 NW 72nd Ave, Hollywood, FL 33024 (954)963-2400. Interment to follow at Lakeside Memorial.

We will have artists creating live for you to watch and for pretty cheap, you can jump in and learn some crafts. You can learn the traditional paper cuts for only $3.00 or decorate your own plush sugar skull for only $6.
There is plenty of free stuff too. Firstly, and most importantly, you can soak up as much art as your eyes can handle (of course, taking the art home isn't free), Mexican munchies and virgin margaritas will be dished out free of charge for your pleasure.
A good time is bound to be had by all, so please, come on out Saturday night.

Update on the mini Odd Duck Retro and Geek show....
If you haven't already heard, the Hollywood Craft Mafia is mixing up the craft show style by hosting a mini show on November 13th. What is a mini show, you ask? We have carved out a little bit of space in two businesses in the same plaza and are bringing in local (and some not-so-local) artists & crafters to show & sell some great handmades. We didn't want to limit your selection, so we limited the size of the table. Each vendor has a small area to show off their geeky-est or retro-est merchandise from their inventory. Whether you are coming out for the retro crafts or the geek, you'll want to check them both out. Retro is housed inside Jezebel and you'll find the Geek stuff inside Radio-Active records. And, convient for you... they are in the same shopping plaza on E. Sunrise Blvd in Fort Lauderdale.

Mini Odd Duck Retro and Geek Show

I'm sure you are familiar with the Odd Duck Bazaar that we host in the spring, but one show a year just wasn't enough for the Hollywood Craft Mafia, so we are adding another to our calendar, November 13th. We wanted to break out of the craft show mold (well, a little bit at least) by doing a specialized, mini show. This show will be held in 2 locations that are in the same plaza on Sunrise Blvd in Fort Lauderdale, Jezebel Vintage and Radio-Active Records.
Inside Jezebel you will find our mini Retro show, and our mini Geek show will be at Radio-Active.
We'll be talking more about this in the future, so check back or friend us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter to keep up with the action.

If you haven't been to downtown Hollywood in awhile, you are in for a pleasant surprise. Downtown Hollywood is becoming a hub for arts, culture and some fabulous food! Every 3rd Saturday, downtown Hollywood's art galleries host Artwalk. Artwalk runs from 7-10pm and there is free food and wine at the participating businesses. The cost of the Artwalk is Free and if you park in one of the municipal garages, the 1st 2 hours of your parking is free too! You can't beat that right?
Also, if you come early, you can check out the Saturday Market that is hosted every Saturday in the palm court area of the Arts Park. And it is free too!
So, if you are wondering why I'm going on and on about how much fun there is to be had in downtown Hollywood, it is because we'd like you to join us there this Saturday August 21st.

Awhile back, the Hollywood Craft Mafia girls got together for a movie night in one of our member's living room. We had snacks and relaxed on her big comfy couch to watch this fantastic documentary about the Indie Craft 'Scene' called "Handmade Nation". We had such a great time. No work, no planning for future events. Just enjoyed a night together.
BUT... being the planners and big thinkers that we are, we couldn't resist but to plan a night to do it again, but this time... invite everyone. The whole idea of being a part of the Craft Mafia is to spread the craft love, so that is exactly what we did. We teamed up with a great little independent local coffee shop for a free movie night. Just show up, enjoy the movie and some free popcorn.
Brew Cafe is, of course, open for business and the Craft Mafia girls and I will have some of our handcrafts on display for sale as well so if you are just dying to spend some money, there will be ways to do that.

So, we'll see you there tomorrow night at 8...

"When I was in high school I was more than an outcast, I was an untouchable. I was never good enough for anyone. Those closest to me flip flopped between my being too fat, too thin, always worried about what I looked like, worried why I didn’t look like the other girls…. From what I could tell, sex made you popular. It seemed that being accepted was more important than anything else. I sought out sex and found it in all of the wrong places. I was taken advantage of by older men and was used by the boys in school, it was horrible. In keeping the company I did, I found myself in abusive relationships and humiliating, dehumanizing sexual encounters. I went to a Catholic school where we were taught abstinence only sex ed, so I had no idea how truly easy it was to get STD’s, to become pregnant, and all of the other extra’s that go along with irresponsible sex. All of it hurt and many of the scars from those consequences will follow me for the rest of my life. All of that and in the end it didn’t matter. I was still an outcast.

For a long time I didn't think about my Vagina, to avoid feeling all of the things that you feel after all of that. Whenever I thought of my Vagina in any context, I got this sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I felt dirty, I felt useless, I felt ashamed and I felt used, thrown away, I felt like a piece of garbage. Death, sadness and humiliation all lingered there.

Last year a friend of mine asked me to see the Vagina Monologues. I thought it was going to be funny, like a big Vagina joke, so I agreed. Then I saw all of these women who were proud enough of their Vaginas to get up in front of a room of people and say it. I was horribly jealous. I wanted what they had. Soon, I realized what they had was a Vagina. I have one of those too. There was nothing wrong with my Vagina and it didn’t need anyone's approval! I started making these things to help get out my frustration, then to celebrate my Vagina, now to take it back. Its mine now.

I hope that my work will inspire all of you to look at women differently, and to heal your own soul, because I know that we are all wounded in one way or another."

Will W has been a professional artist since 1972. Starting in visual merchandizing management with a major midwest retail chain, he learned at an early age to turn anything into something else. An interior design degree was next at Harrington Institute in Chicago

1980 was the beginning of a successful mural painting business, creating wonderful walls for prestigious residences and major corporations in cities across the country.

In 1993 he opened a very experimental storefront on Miami Beach where he twisted all manner of found materials into new usable objects and fine art. A couple of years later the concept expanded to The Miami Design District. That larger workshop and gallery showcased over a dozen artist's work in reclamation art. Furnishings of all types, home accessories and fine art were displayed. Everything in the gallery was made of at least 80% recycled materials.

Those two stores are long gone but not the passion for reclamation art. Now living on the Gulf Coast of Florida, he feels like he might just be getting started. Etsy has opened a new world of possibilities for this well seasoned artist.

Mickey G is Will's mother. She is a retired hairstylist and a very active senior. It appears that Mickey can sew anything. A few years ago she started to make teddy bears out of recycled fur coats. These very coveted bears and her other fashion and home accessories will be showcased here whenever they become available. As I said... she is a busy bee, we will beg her for more pieces.

Well, we just doubled the size of the Odd Duck Handmade Bazaar.

Originally only 30 vendors, the show has expanded into a second room and is now 60 vendors! Private trunk show hosted by the Hollywood Craft Mafia has a few spaces left for vendors. This is a private, exclusive event. Buyers are invited owners and managers of boutiques and shops within the Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach and Miami areas. Trash to Treasure Creative Re-Use Center field trip

The Hollywood Craft Mafia is sponsoring a field trip to check out a really cool spot. Trash to Treasure is a re-use center that collects items from the community and business in order to be re-used. We've never been before, but are very excited about this field trip. They charge a yearly membership but are allowing the Hollywood Craft Mafia and our friends to come for a private tour from 10 to Noon this Sunday.

Last month we added a new member to the Hollywood Craft Mafia. Alexis is a very talented artisan who makes and sells a variety of great crafts. She makes tattoo inspired jewelry out of hand drawn shrinky-dink plastic, hand paints purses and creates these fantastic lighted shadow boxes with all sorts of artistic features. She is super talented and I'm sure she will keep us in awe with her contribution to this group.
We'll have her put up her own introduction post soon, but right now she is in the last minute prep-zone working on getting ready for a show in Austin, TX this Saturday.

Last weekend Tina (Working Girl) and I had a booth at the Sanctuary of Treasures charity craft fair. We had such good fun that we forgot to take pictures of our booth. Thankfully, one of the sweet ladies from our neighboring booth (beadmine jewelry) sent me this one lone picture of ourselves.
I would say that the show was a success and made us very excited for our next show in December at Woodstock Arts & Craft Fair.

Sanctuary of Treasures Charity Craft Show

On Saturday, along with Tina (working girl crafts), I will be selling my wares at the Sanctuary of Treasures Charity Craft Fair. 100% of the vendor fees from this event will be donated to the Susan G. Komen breast Cancer foundation. This charity is very close to my heart because I lost my mom to breast cancer six years ago. Unfortunately, there are too many of us that are, and will be effected by this horrible disease. By participating in this event we are not only happy to be sharing our crafts, but working to benefit a wonderful organization.

Hi, my name is Rebecca and I am the owner of Dragonfly Crafts. You can find me on etsy at DragonflyCrafts.etsy.com. I mostly sell notebooks/sketchbooks/notepads, mirrors, pendants, cards, and jewelry. I am not selling jewelry online at the moment (except for the pendants), only in person at craft shows and such. Here are just a few of the items and designs that I sell in my etsy shop. I am always making new things so it is definitely worth it to check things out every so often.

I am the founder of the Hollywood Craft Mafia which was started about 2 years ago now. If you want to know a little more about the Craft Mafia or the Hollywood Craft Mafia, there are these sites: www.hollywoodcraftmafia.comand www.craftmafia.com. In the near future we plan on having community events (under the name South Florida's Craft Community Collective) and even a few craft shows here and there. In my "real" life I am a mother of 3. I have three daughters, ages 5 and 7 months, so my house is a bit high energy, you could say. The three girls plus my step daughter, who is 7 lives with me and my husband and our 3 dogs. AHHHHH!

While keeping up with the demands of motherhood and of Dragonfly Crafts, I am also an Office Manager for the family business, Airport Recycling, and I have some new business ventures in the works. More to come about that a bit later :)

Let me introduce myself, I'm Shelley

Hello. I'm the newest member of the Hollywood Craft Mafia. I'm a seamstress with quirky taste that changes from one day to the next. I have been sewing since childhood and recently have become obsessed with kitschy aprons. I like to create aprons with unexpected fabric combinations and unusual fabrics.

I've got an affinity for vintage prints and absolutely adore polka dots.

I am a business woman and believe in a woman's ability to do anything she wants to, including being a domestic diva. Having a stylish kitschy apron can be empowering to accomplish amazing things in the home, or can be motivation for getting the un-fun chores finished. Doesn't everyone work better when they look good?

I started sewing in elementary school making clothes for my dolls. In middle school I started making my own clothes. High School, I pretty much just "re-made" store bought things and when I moved in to the dorm at FSU I started making money with my skill by charging dorm-mates for alterations and repairs.

I love Halloween and love creating costumes, so I usually create several costumes a year for myself and friends. This wonder woman one is my favorites. I've also done a Raiders Cheerleader, Julius Caesar, Little Red Riding Hood, a Baby Lady Bug, Madonna, Tinkerbell and Captain America, just to name a few.

I worked as a bartender through college then for a few more years while floundering around trying to avoid getting a "real job". Being a sports fan working on game day, I needed something to wear. So, I created a corset top to wear to work and the orders started pouring in. Since then, I've made tops out of dozens of NFL and NCAA fabrics.
So, that's it. That is me and my craft. I love fabric and love to create things out of it.
